Sister, Mother, Grandmother, and Local Leader Serving the Hawthorne Community!

ABOUT ANGIE

Angie's roots trace back to her migrant farm-working parents who left San Antonio, Texas to find work in the northwest. Born in Mountain Home, Idaho, she’s the second youngest of ten siblings who grew up in a household with a strong work ethic. From an early age, Angie worked side-by-side with her siblings, operating a forklift, laying irrigation pipes, and running a commercial sawmill.

Tragedy struck the Reyes family in December 1977 when Angie's mother, Lupe, passed away unexpectedly, leaving six children to be raised by their father Emilio who never remarried. During this challenging time, Angie developed her sense of activism, self-determination, and perseverance, particularly in standing up for her brother diagnosed with Down syndrome and caring for her father who spoke limited English.

After graduating from high school, Angie worked as a preschool teacher and teacher's aide, obtaining vocational training and a certificate in preschool education. During this period, she met her future husband, Edwin English, a United States Air Force member stationed in Idaho.

In 1988, Angie moved to Los Angeles, California, as a young mother and veteran's wife. Today, she is a devoted Christian, proud grandmother of eight grandchildren from her three adult daughters, and has been a resident of Hawthorne for nearly 40 years.

Angie's humble beginnings, compassionate spirit, and strong family values led her to a career in public service. Her journey began with her election as President of Leuzinger High School's PTA, where she successfully united parents, teachers, and students in collaborations involving services, resources, information, and grant funding.

Angie Reyes English is celebrated for her extensive government experience and unwavering commitment to community service. In November 2005, she was overwhelmingly elected as Hawthorne's City Clerk with 66% of the vote. Since then, she has furthered her qualifications by completing training as a Certified Municipal Clerk (CMC) at USC Riverside. After four years serving as city clerk, Angie later won a seat on Hawthorne City Council in 2009 and is currently running for re-election.

Known for her coalition-building skills and dedication to the Hawthorne community, Angie offers over twenty years of public sector expertise. She has held leadership roles that have shaped community and municipal collaborations, proving to be an effective advocate and strategic problem-solver. Her talents include managing complex operations, spearheading community events, and serving as a crucial liaison across agencies.

With her notable skills in negotiations, case management, and bilingual communications, Angie's commitment to community service and policy excellence positions her as a council member capable of delivering strategic and positive change.

In recognition of her extensive public service, Angie was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Public Service and a Humanitarian Award in 2023.
